How to fill the spreadsheet
- Tap Blank spreadsheet for this taal. Open it in Excel or Google Sheets.
- One column per matra. Each avartan is two rows: lyrics on top, swars below. Leave one blank row between avartans.
- Type the section name (Sthayi, Antara 1…) in the Tag column on its first line. Nothing else goes in Tag.
- If a line runs past the last matra, write the rest on the next two rows, directly below with no blank row.
- Start in the column where the bandish starts. A blank cell is a silent beat: the taal keeps clicking.
- Swars: S r R g G m M P d D n N. Small letter = komal, m = shuddh Ma, M = tivra Ma. S' = taar, D, = mandra, SR = two swars in one beat, - = hold, . = rest.
- Save as CSV and tap Open a saved file, or copy the cells and tap Paste from spreadsheet.
All sections are shown together. You can fix notes in the sheet here; choose one section to add, move or delete avartans.
Link this device to your notations library? Your notations from the other device will appear here, and notations you make here will go there.
This device is already synced. Linking again will switch it to the library from the QR code.
Playback
If your bandish starts at matra 5, Play starts at matra 1 and you hear the taal for 4 beats before the swars begin.
"Current at top" keeps the avartan being played at the top, so the lyrics of what comes next stay in view below it.
Sync between devices On
Keep the same notations on your laptop and phone. This is optional. No sign-up, email or phone number.
Your notations are then stored on the Swar server, and the site owner can see them. Do not turn this on for anything private.
Already use sync on another device?
To link a phone, open Swar Rachana on it, scan the QR code that appears here after you turn sync on, or enter the 6-digit code.
Write this code down. With it you can link a new device, or get your notations back if this browser is cleared.
Works once, for more minutes.

How to write swars
- S r R g G m M P d D n N: Sa, komal Re, Re, komal Ga, Ga, shuddh Ma, tivra Ma, Pa, komal Dha, Dha, komal Ni, Ni. Lowercase is komal; m is shuddh Ma and M is tivra Ma.
- S' is taar (upper octave: mark after the swar), D, is mandra (lower octave). On the keypad, choose Lower, Middle or Upper first and every swar key follows it. Sheets that write a mark before the swar (like 'D) mean mandra: type D,.
- - holds the previous swar. . is a rest.
- Beats are separated by a space or |. Swars written together share one beat, so SRGm is four swars in one beat, SR is two.
- One line is one avartan. Write exactly as many beats as the taal has matras (16 for Teentaal). If the bandish starts later in the cycle, set "Written line starts at"; the first line then begins at that matra.
- "Plays ×2" repeats an avartan in a row. "+ Insert below" adds an empty avartan after this one.
